The Islamic Republic of Iran Railways is a member of the SMGS Convention in the OSJD organization.

The forwarding company “Behineh Tarabar Azhour” started its activities in 2012 in Tehran, simultaneously with the recognition of the markets of Central Asian countries and Russia.

Iran’s railway borders are defined as follows:

A – Railway borders with Turkmenistan:

  1. Sarakhs: Connected to Iran by both broad and standard gauge tracks. More than 300 wagons are bogie-exchanged daily at this station for entry/exit to/from Iran/Turkmenistan.
  2. Incheh Borun: The name of the Turkmenistan border railway station connected to this station is Ak-Yayla. Connected to Iran by both broad and standard gauge tracks.
  3. Lotfabad: The name of the Turkmenistan border railway station connected to this station is Artik. Lotfabad station is not connected to Iran’s railway lines.

It should be noted that Iran’s railway lines are 1435 mm (European standard), and only wagons from broad gauge tracks can travel at the same border station.

B – Railway borders with Azerbaijan:

  1. Astara: Next to the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan’s railway line enters Iran, and at the Iranian railway terminal, loading and unloading of import, export, and transit wagons are carried out. Unfortunately, Azerbaijan’s line is not yet connected to Iran’s internal lines, but this line is used for the North-South corridor, using combined road transport for containers, which are transferred to Rasht station in Gilan province and then to Bandar Abbas and vice versa for the North-South corridor operations.
  1. Jolfa: One of Iran’s oldest border stations, built in the last century, connecting Iran to the former Soviet countries. This station was active for both passenger and freight transport until the collapse of the former Soviet Union. After the destruction of the railway lines connected to Armenia, unfortunately, only rail connection to the Nakhchivan region is possible.

F – Rail-water border with the Persian Gulf:

In Iran, petrochemical and oil products, construction and mineral products, nuts and dates, polymer products, and metals have the highest export statistics to Russia, Central Asian countries, and the Baltic region, with part of the transport of these products being handled by the railway.

Transit and imported products such as sulfur, chemical fertilizers, flour, wheat, cotton, grains, wood, and legumes are transported by rail through Iran to destinations in Turkey and Europe, Pakistan, Iraq, the Persian Gulf countries, East Asian countries, and India.
